This beautiful walk circles a branch of the Bay of Islands and travels past beaches and bays, through woodlands and reserves. The full trip typically starts at Paihia and goes along the shore to the half way point at Opua ferry where it crosses to Okiato. The Okiato section goes through some lovely restored reserves and beaches and finishes at the old whaling town of Russell where you can catch the ferry back to Paihia.
This section was partially closd for a whils but has now been repaired and is open again.

Parts of the track pass through areas managed by Kiwi Protection Project areas whoes volunteers have projects that remove pests, and weeds and plant native trees to restore the environment and make it safe for our precious birds.
Visitors to our beautiful Bay are can enjoy the natural new Zealand's woods and birds but it is the dedicated, behind the scene work, of the volunteers that make it possible.

Work on the track is going on all the time and we need volunteers and support. If you feel like joining a group of volunteers, most of whom are well past the first flush of youth, and help restore the woodland and wetlands to improve the habitat for native birds, go to the contact page and send an email.
