Re-introduced in 2002 and now widespread throughout the peninsular. This species is considered to be less abundant and more threatened nationally than the kiwi. While a little more resilient to smaller predators than kiwi, they are still vulnerable to mustelids, cats and dogs.
Fernbird - Matata
This seldom-seen species has been in decline and is vulnerable to both predation and habitat loss. It prefers wetland and saltmarsh habitat, but will range into fernland and rank grass. It survives in the Pipiroa, Orongo Bay and Uruti Bay wetlands.
